On behalf of the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), the Technical Committee 307 on Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and the Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 1st International Conference on Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering, which will take place from June 28 to July 1, 2027.

As widely recognized, societies are facing increasing challenges related to climate change, natural hazards, urbanization, and the responsible use of natural resources. In this context, geotechnical engineering plays a crucial role in supporting the development of safe, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure.

Given the current state of knowledge, Technical Committee 307 considered it both timely and necessary to bring together researchers, academics, engineers, practitioners, and students to exchange knowledge and discuss recent advances in sustainable geotechnical engineering.

It was within this framework that the theme of this inaugural conference, Geodiversity and Resilience, was defined. This theme aims to highlight the importance of understanding and embracing the diversity of geological and geotechnical conditions across the globe, while fostering innovative and sustainable engineering solutions capable of addressing pressing environmental and societal challenges.

Through keynote lectures, technical sessions, and discussions, the conference will provide a platform for presenting cutting-edge research, sharing experiences, and exploring future directions for the discipline.

The conference will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, a historic and vibrant city overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, offering an inspiring setting for this first edition. We hope that participants will not only benefit from the technical programme but also enjoy the rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality of Portugal.

We look forward to welcoming you to Lisbon in 2027 for a stimulating and memorable conference, organized under the auspices of ISSMGE TC307 and the Portuguese Environmental Geotechnics Commission (CPGA) of the Portuguese Geotechnical Society (SPG).
