Lisboa is the capital of Portugal since the mid-13th century, which makes it one of the oldest in the world. It is the country’s largest city, located on the estuary of the Tagus River, on the European Atlantic Coast. Around 3 million people live in the Lisboa region, with around 600 thousand living in the capital itself.
The city is a miscellany of character and charm, where 20 centuries of history and cultural influences mingle with modern trends and lifestyles. Legend tells that it was founded by Ulysses. Most likely it was founded by the Phoenicians; the name comes from “Olissipo”, which has its origins in the Phoenician words “Allis Ubbo”, meaning “enchanting port”.
Lisboa is among the top tourist preferences in Europe; it has been distinguished, over the years, in different categories. We invite you to find out more of its distinctive features: the seven hills and their views, the presence of Tagus River and 25 de Abril bridge, the trams and elevators, the ancient neighbourhoods with “azulejos” on the walls and intricately patterned cobblestones under your feet, the monuments, wonderful food and Fado music (distinguished by UNESCO as “World Immaterial Heritage and Patrimony”), the diverse cultural and nightlife, the art collections, such as the one from Gulbenkian Foundation, and the breath taking landscape in the surroundings.
Lisboa is also a place to inhale salty Atlantic air, sunbathe and hit the waves. Ferries ply the Tagus River and can take you to the south shore, with beautiful views of Lisboa. If you take the train from Cais do Sodré, you can visit Belém, relive the Age of Discoveries and eat its world famous “pastel de nata”. Half an hour away by train are the beaches and a bit further Casino Estoril and Cascais, with its charming town centre. Sintra, a Neverland of fairy tale and whimsical palaces, exotic gardens and wild woodlands, is a UNESCO World Heritage village not to miss. The train to Sintra departs from Rossio station every 20 minutes and takes about 40 minutes.
Richly captivating, loaded with atmosphere, charm and great food, Lisboa invites You!
